Summer
A British summer is full of abundance from the beauty and fragrance of Sweet Peas and Roses in the early flush of summer to the vibrant colour and textures of the start of the Dahlia season and the flush of dramatic spires of Delphiniums and Snapdragons or the airy beauty of Cosmos and tall Scabiosa in high summer. There is no doubt that you would be spoilt for choice of floral inspiration should you choose to wed in the summer season.

Summer is truly the season of abundance and offers such variety in structure, form and colour. The beautiful fragrance of Phlox, Sweet Peas and Roses make them a must for any arrangement at this time of year. The airy stems of Cosmos, tall Scabious, Cornflower, Nigella, Verbena and Gaura add a meadow like movement to arrangements and installations. As do the umbels of Ammi and the more delicate Orlaya. But let’s not forget that summer is the beginning of the Dahlia season and all the colour and textural qualities that they have to offer – essential choices for a summer wedding.
For buttonholes, again there is a lot of choice from petit dahlia pom poms, vibrant zinnias or Nigella coupled with sprigs of salvia or rosemary. Amaranthus in both warm reds/burgundy and soft greens are a stunning choice for foliage in both a bridal bouquets and larger arrangements and installations. Pittosporum, Cornus and wispy twisted Willow are also perfect foliage for this time of year.
Colour palette
The colours of summer range from the first flush of summer in June with soft blush, ivory, pastel tones and powder blue to bright coral, magenta, sunflower yellow and sky blue of high summer. By late summer the tones shift to deep plum, burnt orange and rich claret and burgundy.
Dahlias offer a full range of colour with tones of pink from pastel to deep pinks, purples and plum to vibrant yellow, orange, and red. Cosmos offers pure whites to apricot, and a rich deep pink to magenta. Cornflower and scabiosa can be used to offer small bright pops of colour including pale pink to a deep purple.
If you are seeking to include the traditional ‘something blue’ then look no further than the architectural spires of delphiniums or campanula. If its smaller pops of colour that’s preferred, then blue cornflower or nigella is a good choice. Something a bit different and offering more texture would be echinops (globe thistle) or eryngium (sea holly).
